The Barbie® Music Video

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

I love it! Although I doubt I am nowhere near coordinated enough to do that thigh shake + crab sideways walk move… I’d probably just stomp and trip over *ouch* I think Barbie needs to look more like her dancers, toned and fit and not so shapeless and skeletal!

Choreographed by JaQuel Knight of Beyonce’s Single Ladies dance routine. And only 20 years old! Genius!

He even shows you the moves in this vid! (it’s too wide to embed in this blog lol)

Kyori – Flight Pattern SKU# 91230

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

I’ve been waiting for an articulated Kyori doll with brown eyes and black hair that I could *afford* to add to my collection. This doll went on sale but she doesn’t have black hair… so medium-dark brown hair will have to do for now…

Of course, no post is complete without a criticism by yours truly – why does Kyori have to be characterised with that awful Dragon Lady (the Asian version of the Sapphire caricature) stereotype? Why couldn’t she be an average girl next door… you know, like the Perrin sisters?

African Royalty by EthiDolls

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

On my daily internet surfing adventures *cough* I found a company by the name of EthiDolls that made collectible African historical characters. They were formed in 2003 and are based in the USA.

Currently, they have two dolls in their line – Makeda, The Queen of Sheba (modern day Ethiopia – East Africa) and Queen Mother Yaa Asantewaa of the Asante (modern day Ghana – West Africa).

These dolls are 16 inch tall and hand crafted by Madame Alexander (The Alexander Doll Company, Inc.) and at USD $139 each, they are a bit pricey so I guess I’ll be admiring from afar for a while.

This is an excerpt of the company’s profile -

Established in 2003, EthiDolls® is a developer of collectible quality, educational, African dolls and accessories, based in New York City. The company’s mission is to create unique dolls and related accessories that help children and adults embrace African heritage, culture and tradition.
Salome Yilma, EthiDolls’ CEO, conceived and designed the line of learning and exploration products along with Yeworkwoha Ephrem, EthiDolls’ EVP. Both women are Ethiopian entrepreneurs living in the New York area.
Through EthiDolls, Ms. Yilma and Ms. Ephrem plan to develop a line of culturally authentic and unique Signature Dolls and Accessories that teach history, celebrate cultural diversity and offer new play patterns.

Apparently, King Solomon’s son Menelik by Makeda took the Ark of the Covenant back to Ethiopia after he visited his father. I find this story terribly intriguing… even to this day this story is still quite a mystery.

Adelia is her Name

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

I have decided to call my travelling doll – Adelia

I’m really terrible at choosing names and have been looking at heaps of lists of names… I did have Darla stuck in my head – that’s the name of the blonde vampire in the tv shows Buffy and Angel (I love vampires) and also the name of the dentist’s scary niece in the Pixar movie Nemo (I also love fishies)… but Darla doesn’t really suit this doll…

I did think of Devika too – it means Little Goddess in Indian (Sanskrit). Geddit? she’s little and she’s gonna be so spoilt (by me) LOL but it think it sounds a bit harsh spoken out loud… I wanted a softer name…

Adelia looks pretty in hand written form, it also starts with A so it means my little lady’s photos will be on top of my file lists and I can still call her Dee for short.

She also gets to call first dibs on my new goodies! Here she is modelling a Silkstone fashion – Midnight Mischief SKU# B0148 (2002) – that I scored in a raffle! weeeeee!
