What Happened to the Olmec Corporation?

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

This is one of those “I don’t know the answer and I hope you do” type of questions…

Recently, I’d purchased an Imani & Menelik set from a fellow collector. They were made by a company called the Olmec Corporation. I jumped onto google and found… pretty much nothing about them.

Passion.Fruit – Art by Brianna McCarthy

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

I’ve been meaning to do a post about Brianna McCarthy’s artwork for um… *cough* a while now.

Brianna McCarthy is an artist based in Trinidad and Tobago who uses the mediums of inks and water colours in her art as well as some graphite work. Recently she has picked up an interest in scrap booking…

She uses strong bright colours in her colour work… like oranges, vibrant blues, pinks and golds, amongst many other colours… the colours are a juicy delicious (and healthy) feast for the eyes.

Just some samples of her gorgeous work -

Halle Berry “Jinx” Doll

Friday, December 4th, 2009

The Bond Girls by Mattel are out! Well, they are if you are in the US or can find them on ebay…

Sounds like a new body (2009) AND a new face sculpt (2009)… yay!

She’s also wearing an orange bikini… that to me is bonus! … ok so I happen to like orange very much…

Other dolls in this series are
- Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder in Dr. No (1962, Bond Movie #01) with what appears to me to be the Daria face sculpt
- Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore in Goldfinger (1964, Bond Movie #03) with the very overused but still very pretty Mackie face sculpt
Halle Berry herself, played Giacinta ‘Jinx’ Johnson in Die Another Day (2002, Bond Movie #20)

Curious how none of those ladies are from the 1970′s, 80′s or 90′s… just bypassed all those decades hmmm

Now… how about a Michelle Yeoh (as Colonel Wai Lin in Tomorrow Never Dies, 1997, Bond Movie #18) Bond Girl doll too please?

Stacey with 1st and 2nd Waves of So in Style dolls

docHi Stacey, firstly thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to interview you.
smi – I also want to start off by thanking you! If I’m not mistaken, other than Essence.com your site was one of the first to post pictures and blog about my So In Style dolls.

docI would like to start off by firstly congratulating you on the sold out success of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Barbie (I have one, I LOVE HER!) and ongoing sales of the So In Style (from hereon to be referred to as SiS) dolls!
smi – Thank you! I really enjoyed creating the AKA Barbie for such a prominent group of women. Designing this doll actually gave me the extra push to start creating the SIS line of dolls.

docSo, to start off this interview I would like to ask you about the original concept of the SiS dolls. How long ago did the idea of this doll line come up? What influenced you in the concept design stage of these dolls? Did your daughter influence your designs?
