Stacey with 1st and 2nd Waves of So in Style dolls

docHi Stacey, firstly thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to interview you.
smi – I also want to start off by thanking you! If I’m not mistaken, other than Essence.com your site was one of the first to post pictures and blog about my So In Style dolls.

docI would like to start off by firstly congratulating you on the sold out success of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Barbie (I have one, I LOVE HER!) and ongoing sales of the So In Style (from hereon to be referred to as SiS) dolls!
smi – Thank you! I really enjoyed creating the AKA Barbie for such a prominent group of women. Designing this doll actually gave me the extra push to start creating the SIS line of dolls.

docSo, to start off this interview I would like to ask you about the original concept of the SiS dolls. How long ago did the idea of this doll line come up? What influenced you in the concept design stage of these dolls? Did your daughter influence your designs?

Alpha Kappa Alpha Barbie Doll – Photos

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

It seems like a lot of people keep this doll in the box (and oh yes, it is a very pretty and shiny box too) so I thought I’d share some DEBOXED photos of this little lady.

The Eye Colours of Black Dolls

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

A comment by Dani (091010) on my First Thoughts on SiS Dolls (090618) got me looking a little bit more closer at the eyes of my African American dolls…

It is no secret that in America, the majority of African American people have some white ancestry and for that matter, a lot of white people have some hidden African ancestry too. This issue has been bought up yet again by the probing of the genealogy of the First Lady of the USA*. This extensive mixing of genes can result in some *colourful* features. It is no surprise to find African American people with naturally green, grey and blue eyes. It is also no surprise to find that MOST African American people have brown eyes (as do most white people), it is the dominant gene after all!

This might be more of a playline issue but… why are dolls made to show eyes of varying shades but not often enough the brown eyes that most humans have? I have always thought it was artistic licence, you can paint a doll’s face any colour you want! But if we are talking about representation then why are African American dolls made with eyes all colours of the rainbow instead of the colour of the earth? It has always been said, looking into someone’s eyes is like looking through a window to their soul… what if you’re looking into the wrong eyes? Are you looking into the wrong soul? (ok, I’ve just confused myself here too O_o)

AKA and Vogue Dolly Goodness

Thursday, August 6th, 2009
did some shopping...

did some shopping...

Vogue Italia July ed. Air Mail rate – AUD $33
(well, actually that’s nothing special because Vogue Italia Air Mail mags always cost that much)

AKA doll Pink Label 2008 – AUD $125
A doll that originally cost about USD $50 and is PINK LABEL now goes for more than USD $200 ALWAYS on e(vil)bay – that usually means more than AUD $300 – in other words “I ain’t got that kinda cash!!!” but now she’s mine at last! (yeah, I know it’s only been a year since her release)

… credit card is now is massive pain yet again *cri cri* (ha! it wasn’t even my cash to begin with *sighs*)

Would it be weird if I wanna keep these two items on the pillow (well, maybe bedside table) while I sleep tonight? LOL *hides*
