Missing Shade(s) of Black?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

This is a question for fellow Barbie doll collectors…

I seem to have a gap in dark skin tones… yes/no?

missing shade(s) of black?

missing shade(s) of black?

Are there any dolls that have a skin tone that is in between light brown and dark brown? Most of my other AA dolls are the same colour as Uhura (second doll of the left) and a few ever so slightly a teensy bit darker… but nothing quite medium-ish…

ADD – I *think* the shade I’m looking for is used for the doll head on the stick labelled 17442 Asha (left of image), or maybe even the shade used for 4092 Christie – apparently Barbie uses seven different skin tones… I’ve counted a lot more than that, must be the variations in different batches of dolly plastic…

haha… I’ve even created a quick scale to compare the skin shades (seven variations as according to “official info”)… hmmm (am I weird?)

Aside – even my partner reckons his skin shade is in between (I’ve checked, it’s true lol)

Still to do – a proper post about Mixis dolls…

BTW did anyone else notice the total whiteness of the M(y) F(avorite) B(arbie) D(oll) series? Or maybe the lack of repro dolls of color was planned on purpose to keep the vintage prices of those rare dolls up?

POP Life Christie SKU# N6598

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

I was going to write a proper post about Mixis dolls but… I have terrible time management and I usually end up writing nonsensical sarcastic gibberish garbage when I’m sleepy lol

So I’ll just post some piccies of my new POP Life Christie doll :D

She comes with the Teresa (face used for the Hispanic friend of Barbie for a while) face mould in a light brown skin tone. She wears a choli and skirt with a sash over her shoulder. Mattel calls this a sari, but a sari would usually consist of multiple metres (which probably wouldn’t work too well at 1:6 scale) rather than a short section for a skirt such as the one which this doll wears.

Aside – OMG, barbiecollector.com has finally added an add this function – welcome to the 21st century!

My New Dolls! POP Christie, Kentucky & FR Luchia

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Finally, my POP Christie, Kentucky Derby along with FR Future Bound Luchia Z. dolls have arrived…

I was waiting for POP Christie to come home so I can finally start writing about dolls in blackface, as in dolls that are of a Caucasian mould but made out of brown plastic. I don’t doubt that there are dark skinned people who have these features but these features are more associated with people of European heritage rather than African ancestry.

Then I can go on (when Arctic Barbie arrives) about how weird it is that dolls that are supposed to be Native American look more East Asian than the dolls that are supposed to be East Asian – yellowface anyone? (I will try to avoid muttering incoherently about various theories involving Indigenous Americans, Mongolians and the Qing Dynasty).

Oh yeah, and Luchia – doll of no-color – will also get a post, how seriously undead does she look? *grins*

Aside – although these dolls are examples of the Eurocentric standards of beauty imposed on black women, I have no intention of selling them. BTW would anyone have an AKA Centennial SKU #L9657 doll they wish to sell (to me)?
