Moxie Girlz by MGA

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

As many doll collectors and enthusiasts would know by now, Bratz (MGA) lost the battle with Barbie (Mattel). It looks like MGA has started work (as in selling already) on a new line of dolls to replace the soon to be taken off the shelves Bratz dolls.

Meet the Moxie Girlz

Lexa, Sasha, Avery and Sophia

Lexa, Sasha, Avery and Sophina

They are -

  • Lexa – a brunette doll with fair skin and green eyes, she is most likely Caucasian
  • Sasha – a black haired doll with light brown skin, she could be African American or any other ethnicity with dark skin
  • Avery – blonde, fair with blue eyes, has to be Caucasian
  • Sophina – black haired doll with olive skin, most likely Hispanic judging by the name…

Of course, Asians don’t exist in this universe either /snark/ or you could pretend that Sophina is Asian with um wavy hair…

I actually think the dolls look really cute and I can see the 5-10 year olds loving these girls. My only other criticism apart from the non-existence of Asians, is that the face mould and the face paints are exactly the same albeit in different colours… but then Bratz was also done with the same face + paint template so I guess it stays consistent with that. Maybe that’s what little kids like? But then, the same criticism could also be applied to current line of Mattel’s Playline Barbie dolls.

These Moxie dolls do look really adorable much better than Bratz I think – does anyone else notice how similar the line name Moxie is to Mixi?

Mixis – Mixed Race Dolls by YNU Group

Friday, June 19th, 2009

YNU Group is a Canadian based company founded by Debbie Goodland (Company President) in 2005, that makes a series of dolls with multi-ethnic features called the Mixis.

You can find pdf info sheets on the YNU Group website.

The Mixis even have a “blog” complete with character profiles.

The four main characters at this point in time are

  • Emerald Okada – this raven haired girl is Black American, Native American and Japanese
  • Houda Degas – this blonde girl is French and Lebanese
  • Opal Nkrumah – this girl with dark blonde curls is Nigerian and British
  • Rosa Dominguez Katz – this brunette is Latina and Jewish

These dolls have fully articulated arms and legs and a naturally proportioned body. (hmm, are the legs really articulated – no visible joints? – TN)

Aparently four more characters will be released in Northern Hemisphere Spring 2009 – Ruby, Kirsten, Melissa and Pria – wasn’t that supposed to be… last month?

Check out the Philly Collector Blog to see real life photos of these dolls :)
