Token Color – BB Model 05 & SiS RW Grace

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

In normal human language…

Token Color – one of some ethnicities NOT European-Caucasian (because Caucasians aren’t neccessarily all of European descent even though the common usage of the word implies otherwise).

BB Model 05 & SiS RW Grace – Barbie Basics Model #05 AND So in Style Rocawear Grace

Why is BB Model 05 a token?
She is the only East Asian representation in the Barbie Basics line up of 12 dolls. No South Asian (Desi, Subcontinental, Indian), Eurasian (Central and Western Asia, Native American peoples) or SE/Oceanic Asian (Malay, Polynesian) in the line up even. She is supposed to represent all of Asia’s diversity? Tough job kiddo.

Stacey with 1st and 2nd Waves of So in Style dolls

Stacey with 1st and 2nd Waves of So in Style dolls

docHi Stacey, firstly thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to interview you.
smi – I also want to start off by thanking you! If I’m not mistaken, other than Essence.com your site was one of the first to post pictures and blog about my So In Style dolls.

docI would like to start off by firstly congratulating you on the sold out success of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Barbie (I have one, I LOVE HER!) and ongoing sales of the So In Style (from hereon to be referred to as SiS) dolls!
smi – Thank you! I really enjoyed creating the AKA Barbie for such a prominent group of women. Designing this doll actually gave me the extra push to start creating the SIS line of dolls.

docSo, to start off this interview I would like to ask you about the original concept of the SiS dolls. How long ago did the idea of this doll line come up? What influenced you in the concept design stage of these dolls? Did your daughter influence your designs?

I wonder if Renee of Womanist Musings will do a review… seriously, she could be saying the absolute worse about collectors and dolls and me but I still think she’s awesome…

My First Ever TROLL!

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

The Dolls of Color blog has received its first ever troll comment!

fkdlfj (kacyclark@——.com) 2009/10/03

this is sooooo rasis i dont c any white dolls

Seriously, you can’t expect to have your comment approved if you leave a name like fkdlfj and can’t even use proper punctuation and correct spelling.

This was left as a comment in the post Sneak Peek – SiS Stylin’ Hair Dolls (090731).

LOTR Cave Troll

LOTR Cave Troll*

The stupidity of that short comments says all there needs to say, I don’t even need to add anything… I’d just wanted a reason to post a picture of a troll here :)

Although I feel like I need to emphasise a few things. Firstly PoC can NOT be racist, racism is prejudice + power… PoC do not have the power required in the equation of racism although many seem to have no problems waving their unhealthy prejudices around but that is not the current issue. Secondly, white dolls are the most common type of doll released and sold – Barbie Fashionistas anyone? To make such a statement reeks of both extreme ignorance and privilege.
